Plenoptic Imaging (PLENOPTIMA) is a four-year (2021–2024) H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network that develops a cross-disciplinary approach to plenoptic imaging, which includes new optical materials and sensing principles, signal processing methods, new computing architectures, and vision science modelling. With this aim, PLENOPTIMA integrates five of the strongest research groups in nanophotonics, imaging and machine learning in Europe with twelve innovative companies, research institutes, and a pre-competitive business ecosystem developing and marketing plenoptic imaging devices and services. The Technische Universität Berlin offers 3 positions for early-stage researchers (ESRs).

We are delighted to announce that our colleague Dr. Sebastian Knorr has been offered a full professorship in digital image processing and media technology a the University of Applied Sciences Jena (UAS Jena).
About UAS Jena: The university was founded on 1 October 1991 as one of the first institutions of higher education of its kind in the newly founded federal states of Germany. Short periods of studying and a practical orientation complement the education at traditional universities and technical universities. Currently, the nine departments of the UAS Jena offer a lot of Bachelor and Master programs. Since the beginning of summer semester 2012, it bears the name of the entrepreneur Ernst Abbe.

Our challenge is to efficiently identify and harvest longest-range correlations in images and video - to allow for leaps in compression. Our strategies completely depart from current JPEG and MPEG/ITU type compression approaches with block processing, block transforms and motion vectors. In our recent work we develop specifically designed SMoE Gating Networks for compression. These networks are based on Steered Mixture-of-Experts (SMoE) networks that distribute swarms of N steered “atoms” into arrays of image pixels (for images) or into 3D stacks of video pixels (for video).
